“Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” (Matthew 24:3).
Jesus did not give them a date.
Instead, He described conditions and events that would characterize the period leading up to His return.
This distinction is important. Bible prophecy was not given so Christians could calculate the exact date of Christ’s return. Jesus plainly said:
“But of that day and hour no one knows” (Matthew 24:36).
Yet He also repeatedly instructed His followers to watch.
“Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming” (Matthew 24:42).
The purpose of understanding prophecy, therefore, is not speculation. It is spiritual awareness and preparation.
With that in mind, here are seven important prophetic signs Scripture reveals concerning the world before Jesus Christ returns.
1. Humanity Will Have the Ability to Destroy All Human Life
One of the most striking statements in Jesus’ Olivet Prophecy concerns the severity of the final period of human history.
Jesus said:
“For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved” (Matthew 24:21–22).
For most of human history, mankind possessed terrible weapons of war, but not weapons capable of threatening human survival on a worldwide scale.
That changed in the modern era.
Nuclear weapons and other technologies of mass destruction have made it possible to envision warfare on a scale previous generations could scarcely imagine.
Jesus’ words indicate that the final crisis will become so severe that, without God’s intervention, human life itself would be threatened.
But notice the hope contained in the same prophecy:
“But for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened” (Matthew 24:22).
Humanity will not destroy itself.
Jesus Christ will intervene.
Bible prophecy ultimately points not toward the extinction of mankind, but toward God’s intervention to save humanity from the consequences of its own rebellion and warfare.
2. Jerusalem Will Become a Central Focus of End-Time Events
Few cities occupy as prominent a place in Bible prophecy as Jerusalem.
The prophet Zechariah recorded God’s warning:
“Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples” (Zechariah 12:2).
He continued:
“And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples” (verse 3).
Jesus likewise spoke about future events involving Jerusalem:
“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near” (Luke 21:20).
Jerusalem’s importance in prophecy does not mean every conflict involving the city fulfills a specific prophecy. Christians should be careful not to interpret every headline as a direct fulfillment of Scripture.
Nevertheless, the Bible clearly places Jerusalem at the center of significant events preceding Christ’s return.
Zechariah 14 describes nations gathering against Jerusalem immediately before divine intervention:
“Behold, the day of the LORD is coming” (Zechariah 14:1).
Then:
“And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives” (verse 4).
Jerusalem will therefore remain a major focal point as God’s prophetic plan moves toward its climax.
3. A Major End-Time Conflict Will Develop Around the Middle East
Daniel 11 contains one of the Bible’s most detailed prophetic accounts of competing kingdoms and military conflicts.
Near the conclusion of the prophecy, Daniel describes a confrontation involving powers identified as the king of the South and the king of the North:
“At the time of the end shall the king of the south attack him; and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind” (Daniel 11:40).
Notice the timing:
“At the time of the end.”
The prophecy continues by describing military movement into the Middle East and the “Glorious Land,” a biblical reference connected with the land of Israel (Daniel 11:41).
Exactly how every geopolitical detail will develop cannot yet be known.
That should make us cautious.
Bible students should avoid hastily assigning prophetic titles to today’s politicians or nations simply because current events appear to fit a possible scenario.
What Scripture does reveal is that a major geopolitical struggle involving the Middle East will play an important role in the events leading toward the end of this age.
4. A Powerful End-Time Political System Will Arise
The books of Daniel and Revelation describe a powerful political system that will exist shortly before Jesus Christ returns.
Revelation 17 describes a symbolic beast associated with ten kings:
“And the ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast” (Revelation 17:12).
These rulers will temporarily unite their authority:
“These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast” (verse 13).
This system eventually opposes Jesus Christ Himself:
“These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them” (verse 14).
Daniel also describes a final kingdom destroyed by God when He establishes His everlasting Kingdom:
“And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed” (Daniel 2:44).
The Bible therefore describes a final concentration of political and military power immediately before Christ’s return.
Human government will reach a dramatic climax—but it will not have the final word.
The Kingdom of God will replace the kingdoms of this world.
5. Global War, Famine, Disease, and Turmoil Will Intensify
When Jesus’ disciples asked about the sign of His coming, He described a series of worsening world conditions.
He warned:
“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars” (Matthew 24:6).
He continued:
“For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places” (verse 7).
The book of Revelation presents similar conditions through the symbolism of the Four Horsemen of Revelation 6.
These include conquest and deception, warfare, famine, and death.
However, Jesus cautioned against assuming that every war, earthquake, epidemic, or famine means His return is immediately at hand.
He said:
“All these are the beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:8).
These conditions have existed throughout history. What becomes significant is their relationship to the larger prophetic picture and the culmination of events Jesus described.
The lesson for Christians is not panic.
It is vigilance.
6. Religious Deception Will Become Widespread
Interestingly, the first warning Jesus gave when asked about the end of the age was not about war.
It was about religious deception.
“Take heed that no one deceives you” (Matthew 24:4).
He continued:
“For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many” (verse 5).
Later in the same prophecy, Jesus warned:
“For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect” (Matthew 24:24).
Revelation also describes a powerful religious figure who performs impressive signs and influences people to support the end-time beast system (Revelation 13:11–14).
This means Christians cannot judge religious teaching merely by popularity, tradition, emotional appeal, miraculous claims, or the number of people who believe it.
Every teaching must be compared with Scripture.
The apostle Paul wrote:
“Test all things; hold fast what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21).
Religious deception is particularly dangerous because something can appear Christian while departing from what Jesus and the apostles actually taught.
That makes careful Bible study essential.
Don’t simply believe what a preacher, church, website—or this website—tells you. Look up the Scriptures in your own Bible and believe what the Bible actually says.
7. The Gospel of the Kingdom Will Be Preached Throughout the World
Among all the signs Jesus gave, one is especially encouraging.
He said:
“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14).
Notice what Jesus called the message:
“This gospel of the kingdom.”
Jesus began His ministry preaching that same gospel:
“Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel’” (Mark 1:14–15).
The gospel is certainly about Jesus Christ—His sacrifice, resurrection, and role as Savior.
But the gospel Jesus preached also announced the coming Kingdom of God.
That Kingdom is the solution to mankind’s failed attempts to govern itself.
At His return, Jesus Christ will establish God’s government over the nations.
Revelation declares:
“The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!” (Revelation 11:15).
The prophetic message therefore ends with hope.
Human civilization is not heading toward destruction without purpose.
Jesus Christ is returning to establish the Kingdom of God.
How Should Christians Respond to These Signs?
Jesus did not reveal prophecy simply so His followers could recognize world events.
He wanted prophecy to change how they lived.
After describing events leading to His return, Jesus said:
“Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man” (Luke 21:36).
Watching involves more than following the news.
A person could understand geopolitical developments and still be spiritually unprepared.
Biblical watching includes examining ourselves.
Are we drawing closer to God?
Are we repenting of sin?
Are we obeying God’s commandments?
Are we growing in faith?
Are we developing the character of Jesus Christ?
Are we allowing God’s Spirit to transform our lives?
Peter asked the practical question every Christian should consider:
“What manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness?” (2 Peter 3:11).
That is one of the most important questions in Bible prophecy.
We Must Not Set Dates
Throughout history, individuals have repeatedly predicted specific dates for Jesus Christ’s return.
Those predictions have failed.
Jesus specifically warned against this approach.
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only” (Matthew 24:36).
After His resurrection, the disciples again asked about the timing of God’s Kingdom.
Jesus answered:
“It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority” (Acts 1:7).
Christians should therefore avoid prophetic date-setting.
We can recognize the broad signs Scripture gives while admitting what God has not revealed.
There is an important difference between watching and predicting.
Jesus commanded the first.
He warned against assuming we can know the second.
Bible Prophecy Is Ultimately a Message of Hope
Descriptions of end-time events can sound frightening.
But fear is not the central message of Bible prophecy.
Hope is.
Jesus said:
“Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near” (Luke 21:28).
Human governments will not continue forever.
War will not continue forever.
Religious deception will not continue forever.
Human suffering will not continue forever.
Jesus Christ will return.
He will establish the Kingdom of God and begin restoring peace and righteousness to the earth.
Isaiah describes that future:
“Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore” (Isaiah 2:4).
That is where Bible prophecy is ultimately leading.
Not toward the destruction of the earth.
Not toward mankind disappearing.
But toward the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of God’s Kingdom over all nations.
The Most Important Sign Is the One Taking Place in Your Life
It is natural to watch developments in Jerusalem, Europe, the Middle East, warfare, technology, religion, and world politics.
But none of those things should distract us from the most important preparation of all.
Our relationship with God.
Jesus repeatedly emphasized personal readiness:
“Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Matthew 24:44).
The question is not merely:
How close are we to the return of Jesus Christ?
A better question is:
Am I spiritually preparing for His return?
Bible prophecy should lead us toward repentance, obedience, faith, courage, and a deeper relationship with God.
We may not know the day or hour when Jesus Christ will return.
But Scripture assures us that He will return.
And when He does, the kingdoms and governments of mankind will finally give way to the righteous government of the Kingdom of God.
Search the Scriptures for Yourself
Don’t simply take my word for what you have read. Open your own Bible, look up the scriptures for yourself, and examine them carefully. The Bereans were commended because they “searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11). Follow their example. Ask God for understanding, compare Scripture with Scripture, and believe what the Bible actually says.
