Salvation is God’s free gift through Jesus Christ and cannot be earned by human obedience. However, the Bible teaches that Christians obey God’s commandments because they love God, have received His grace, and desire to follow Jesus Christ. Obedience is the evidence of genuine faith—not the means of earning salvation.
One of the greatest misunderstandings in Christianity is the relationship between grace and obedience.
Many people have been taught that Christians must choose between God’s grace and God’s commandments—as though believing in Jesus means God’s law no longer matters. Others believe the opposite—that they must earn God’s acceptance through good works.
The Bible teaches neither of these ideas.
Instead, Scripture reveals a beautiful balance:

Salvation Is a Gift of God’s Grace
The Bible is clear that no human being can earn eternal life.
Every person has sinned and falls short of God’s perfect standard (Romans 3:23). No amount of good deeds can erase past sins or make us righteous before God.
Because of His great love, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die in our place.
Through Christ’s sacrifice, God offers forgiveness, reconciliation, and eternal life as a gift of grace.
Salvation begins with God—not with us.
Without Jesus Christ there would be no forgiveness, no hope, and no future Kingdom.
Why Then Does God Give Commandments?
This question naturally follows.
If salvation is a gift, why did God give the Ten Commandments?
The answer is simple.
God’s commandments reveal His character.
They teach us how to love Him and how to love other people.
The commandments do not compete with grace.
They define the way of life God desires for those He is saving.
When God gave Israel the Ten Commandments, He first reminded them that He had already delivered them from slavery (Exodus 20:1-2). Their obedience was to be a response to His deliverance—not a way of earning it.
The same principle applies today.
Jesus Never Abolished God’s Law
Many people assume Jesus came to replace God’s commandments.
Jesus said exactly the opposite.
“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Matthew 5:17).
He continued by teaching that God’s law would remain until heaven and earth pass away (Matthew 5:17-19).
When asked what a person should do regarding eternal life, Jesus answered:
“If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments” (Matthew 19:17).
Jesus did not teach salvation by works.
He taught that those who truly follow Him will live according to God’s way of life.
Love Produces Obedience
Perhaps Jesus summarized this relationship most simply when He said:
“If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15).
Notice what Jesus did not say.
He did not say:
“Keep My commandments so that I will love you.”
Instead He taught that love comes first.
Obedience follows.
A loving relationship with God naturally changes the way we think, speak, and live.
Obedience is the fruit of love.
Faith Does Not Cancel God’s Law
The apostle Paul strongly emphasized salvation by grace through faith.
Yet Paul never concluded that obedience no longer matters.
Instead he wrote:
“Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.” (Romans 3:31)
Biblical faith and biblical obedience work together.
Faith trusts God.
Obedience follows God.
Neither replaces the other.
True Christians Desire to Walk Like Jesus
The apostle John gives a practical test of genuine Christianity.
“Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.” (1 John 2:3)
John continues by saying that anyone who claims to abide in Christ “ought himself also to walk just as He walked” (1 John 2:6).
The Christian life is not merely believing facts about Jesus.
It is becoming like Him.
As God works within us through His Holy Spirit, our desires begin to change.
We increasingly want to obey because we love the One who first loved us.
The Bible’s Final Picture of God’s People
The final book of the Bible brings everything together.
Revelation describes God’s faithful people this way:
“Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.” (Revelation 14:12)
Notice both elements.
They have faith in Jesus Christ.
They keep God’s commandments.
The Bible never separates these two truths.
The Practical Application for Christians
Understanding grace should produce gratitude—not complacency.
Because Christ gave His life for us, Christians seek to:
- Love God with all their heart.
- Keep His commandments out of love rather than fear.
- Follow Jesus’ perfect example.
- Allow God’s Holy Spirit to transform their character.
- Live faithfully while looking forward to Christ’s return and God’s coming Kingdom.
Obedience is not about earning heaven.
It is about becoming the kind of people God is preparing to live forever in His Kingdom.
