What Is a True Christian? (Romans 8:14–15 Explained)

A true Christian, according to the Bible, is not simply someone who professes belief in Jesus Christ. Romans 8:14–15 teaches that a real Christian is one who is led by the Spirit of God. This Spirit is received through repentance and baptism, bringing the believer into a genuine relationship with God as His child and empowering a life of obedience, transformation, and faithfulness.

Redefining “Christian” by Scripture

In today’s world, the term Christian is often used loosely. Many assume that attending church, saying a prayer, or claiming belief is enough. But when Scripture is allowed to define itself, a much deeper and more powerful definition emerges.

The Apostle Paul provides one of the clearest explanations in Romans 8:14–15:

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God… you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’”

This passage reveals a truth that is often overlooked: a true Christian is identified not merely by belief, but by being led by God’s Spirit.

1. A True Christian Is Led by the Spirit of God

The Bible does not define a Christian by outward actions alone. Instead, it focuses on an inward transformation.

Paul writes that “as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” This means:

  • Christianity is not just intellectual belief
  • It is not just religious participation
  • It is not just emotional experience

It is a Spirit-led life.

To be led by God’s Spirit means:

  • Your thinking is guided by God’s Word (Romans 12:2)
  • Your actions reflect obedience (Romans 6:16)
  • Your desires begin to change (Galatians 5:16–17)

Without God’s Spirit, a person may be religious—but not truly converted (Romans 8:9).

2. The Process of Conversion: Receiving the Spirit

So how does someone become led by the Spirit?

Scripture shows a clear process:

Repentance

A person must recognize sin and turn from it (Acts 2:38).

Baptism

Baptism symbolizes the death of the old self and the beginning of a new life (Romans 6:3–4).

Receiving the Holy Spirit

After repentance and baptism, God grants His Spirit—the power that begins transforming the believer.

This begins a spiritual begettal—a new life initiated by God.

3. Adopted Into God’s Family

Romans 8:15 introduces a powerful concept: adoption.

Through the Holy Spirit, believers become children of God.

  • God becomes Father
  • The believer becomes part of His family

The phrase “Abba, Father” expresses closeness, trust, and relationship.

This identity is not symbolic—it is real and life-changing.

4. The Responsibility of Representing God

With this identity comes responsibility.

Jesus Christ showed the perfect example:

  • Obedience to the Father (John 8:29)
  • A life of service (Mark 10:45)
  • Love rooted in truth (John 14:15)

A true Christian seeks to honor God in:

  • Thoughts
  • Words
  • Actions

This is not about perfection—but direction.

5. How Can You Be Filled With the Spirit?

Being led by the Spirit is not passive—it is something we actively pursue in our daily walk with God. Scripture shows that spiritual growth involves cooperation with God’s work in us.

Here are seven practical, biblical ways to grow in the Spirit:

1. Ask God Daily

Jesus taught that God gives His Spirit to those who ask (Luke 11:13).
Pray daily for God’s Spirit to fill you with His love, presence, and power.

2. Yield Yourself Completely

Surrender your will to God.
Give Him your thoughts, plans, and desires. A life yielded to God is a life He can fill.

3. Practice Deliberate Obedience

Be intentional in obeying God.

  • Guard your words
  • Do what is right
  • Look for opportunities to serve

This is faith in action—and God’s Spirit empowers it.

4. Practice Love

Love is the defining fruit of God’s Spirit (Galatians 5:22).

  • Look for the good in others
  • Choose mercy over judgment
  • Seek to build up, not tear down

When we practice love, we reflect God’s nature.

5. Share the Truth With Others

Take opportunities to speak about Jesus Christ.

You don’t need perfect words—just sincerity.
God’s Spirit works through a willing heart.

6. Praise and Worship God

Express your gratitude and love to God regularly.

  • Thank Him
  • Speak to Him
  • Be still before Him

Worship draws us closer to Him.

7. Cultivate Joy and Thankfulness

Sing, rejoice, and remain thankful (Ephesians 5:19–20).

A thankful heart keeps us spiritually focused and connected to God.

6. More Than a Label—A Living Reality

The message of Romans 8 is both sobering and encouraging.

Being a Christian is not about:

  • A one-time decision
  • A repeated prayer
  • A cultural identity

It is about a living relationship with God through His Spirit.

Conclusion: Are You Being Led?

The defining question is not:

  • Do I believe in Christ?

But:

  • Am I being led by the Spirit of God?

Because Scripture makes it clear:

Those who are led by the Spirit of God—these are the children of God.
