Many people have heard Christians speak about the “Millennium,” but what exactly does the Bible mean by this term?
The word millennium comes from Latin words meaning “thousand years.” Although the word itself does not appear in most English Bibles, Revelation 20 repeatedly describes a period lasting one thousand years.
This period begins following the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of His rule over the nations. Rather than describing believers spending eternity in heaven, Scripture presents a remarkable picture of Christ returning to this earth, establishing the Kingdom of God, and reigning with His resurrected saints.
Understanding the Millennium helps us understand what happens after Christ returns—and where His return fits into God’s larger plan for humanity.
The Millennium Begins With the Return of Jesus Christ
The Millennium cannot be understood apart from the second coming of Jesus Christ.
Revelation 19 describes Christ returning as King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:16). The rebellious powers opposing Him are defeated, and Christ establishes His authority over the nations.
The book of Revelation shows Christ returning at the sounding of the seventh trumpet, following the dramatic events that precede His coming.
The prophet Zechariah also describes this dramatic event:
“And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives” (Zechariah 14:4).
Later in the chapter we read:
“And the LORD shall be King over all the earth” (Zechariah 14:9).
Jesus Christ does not return merely to remove Christians from the earth. He returns as King to rule the earth.
This is the establishment of the Kingdom of God that Jesus preached throughout His ministry.
Satan Will Be Restrained for 1,000 Years
One of the first events associated with the Millennium is the removal of Satan’s influence.
Revelation 20:1-3 describes an angel taking hold of Satan:
“He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years” (Revelation 20:2).
Satan is then placed in the bottomless pit so that:
“he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished” (verse 3).
This is an extraordinary change.
Today Satan is described as one who “deceives the whole world” (Revelation 12:9). He is also called “the god of this age” who blinds people’s minds (2 Corinthians 4:4).
During the Millennium, that worldwide deception will be restrained.
Human beings will still have choices to make, but humanity will finally experience life without Satan continually deceiving the nations.
The Saints Will Reign With Christ
Revelation 20 also reveals who will rule alongside Jesus Christ.
John writes:
“And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years” (Revelation 20:4).
He continues:
“Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection…they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years” (verse 6).
These are the faithful servants of God who are resurrected at Christ’s return.
Revelation 5:10 describes their future responsibility:
“And have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth.”
Surprising as it may seem, the reward of Christians is not simply to leave the earth for heaven. They will serve under Jesus Christ in His government, helping teach and administer God’s righteous way of life throughout the world.
Christ Will Establish God’s Government on Earth
The Millennium will be far more than a period of peace. It will be a time when humanity learns what life is like under the righteous government of God.
Isaiah describes the Messiah’s rule:
“He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, nor decide by the hearing of His ears; but with righteousness He shall judge the poor” (Isaiah 11:3-4).
Human governments have always struggled with corruption, injustice, selfish ambition, and limited understanding.
Christ’s government will be different.
His judgments will be perfectly righteous because His government will be based upon the character and laws of God.
Isaiah 9:7 says:
“Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end.”
The Millennium will demonstrate what happens when the world is governed according to God’s way rather than man’s.
The Nations Will Learn God’s Way
One of the most beautiful prophecies concerning Christ’s future government appears in Isaiah 2.
The prophet describes nations coming to learn from God:
“Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD…He will teach us His ways, and we shall walk in His paths” (Isaiah 2:3).
God’s law will go forth from Zion, and the nations will begin learning a completely different way of life.
This will produce dramatic results:
“They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore” (verse 4).
Imagine a world in which warfare is no longer taught.
Instead of devoting enormous resources to weapons and destruction, humanity will learn God’s way of cooperation, justice, service, and peace.
God’s Law Will Be Taught Throughout the World
The Millennium will not be a lawless age.
Quite the opposite.
Isaiah 2:3 specifically says:
“For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.”
God’s commandments will form the foundation of Christ’s righteous government.
People will learn that God’s law is not a burden designed to make life miserable. It reveals a way of life that produces love toward God and love toward other people.
Jeremiah describes a time when knowledge of God will become widespread:
“They all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them” (Jeremiah 31:34).
The world that has been confused about God for thousands of years will finally have the opportunity to learn His truth.
The Sabbath and God’s Festivals Will Be Observed
Biblical prophecy also indicates that worship during Christ’s reign will include practices God established in Scripture.
Isaiah 66:23 states:
“And it shall come to pass that from one New Moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, all flesh shall come to worship before Me.”
Zechariah gives an especially clear example concerning the Feast of Tabernacles.
After Christ establishes His rule, Scripture says:
“And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations…shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles” (Zechariah 14:16).
This is significant.
The biblical festivals are not merely relics of ancient Israel. Prophecy shows nations observing the Feast of Tabernacles under Christ’s future government.
The Feast itself beautifully pictures this coming age—the time when Jesus Christ will dwell with and rule over humanity.
The Earth Will Experience Restoration
The Millennium will also involve tremendous physical restoration.
Isaiah describes deserts becoming productive:
“The wilderness and the wasteland shall be glad for them, and the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose” (Isaiah 35:1).
He continues:
“For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert” (verse 6).
The devastation caused by warfare and human mismanagement will not remain forever.
Under Christ’s leadership, the earth will be restored.
Isaiah 51:3 describes the transformation:
“For the LORD will comfort Zion…He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD.”
The imagery points toward abundance, restoration, and blessing.
Even the Nature of Animals Will Change
Isaiah 11 describes another remarkable transformation.
“The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the young goat…and a little child shall lead them” (Isaiah 11:6).
The passage continues:
“They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea” (verse 9).
Whether considering human society or the natural world, biblical prophecy portrays the Millennium as a period of profound restoration.
At the center of that transformation is one essential change:
The earth will be filled with the knowledge of God.
Will There Still Be Human Beings During the Millennium?
Yes.
This is an important distinction.
The saints resurrected at Christ’s return will become immortal spirit beings and reign with Christ. But physical human beings will also survive the events surrounding Christ’s return and continue living on the earth.
Zechariah 14:16 specifically refers to:
“everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem.”
These survivors and their descendants will live during Christ’s thousand-year reign.
They will marry, raise families, cultivate the land, build communities, and—most importantly—have the opportunity to learn God’s truth.
The resurrected saints (Christians) will serve Christ in helping teach and guide this physical population.
Why Is It Called the First Resurrection?
Revelation 20:5-6 calls the resurrection of God’s faithful saints the first resurrection.
That wording is important.
If there is a “first” resurrection, Scripture necessarily points toward another resurrection afterward.
Revelation 20 explains:
“But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished” (verse 5).
The Millennium therefore is not the final stage of God’s plan.
Billions of human beings have lived and died without fully understanding God’s truth. Their opportunity has not been lost.
After the Millennium comes another resurrection and another remarkable stage in God’s plan of salvation.
This helps explain why God’s plan is far greater—and far more hopeful—than many people have realized.
What Happens at the End of the Millennium?
Revelation 20 tells us that when the thousand years have ended, Satan will temporarily be released:
“Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison” (Revelation 20:7).
He again deceives people who choose to follow him and leads a final rebellion against God.
That rebellion is quickly ended by divine intervention (verses 8-9).
Satan is then permanently removed from influencing humanity (verse 10).
Following these events comes the resurrection and judgment described in Revelation 20:11-13.
The Millennium therefore represents a major stage in God’s plan—but it is not the end of the story.
The Millennium Is the Coming Kingdom of God on Earth
When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He told them:
“Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10).
The Millennium shows what that prayer ultimately points toward.
Jesus Christ will return.
Satan’s deception will be restrained.
The saints will reign with Christ.
God’s law will be taught.
The nations will learn peace.
The earth will be restored.
And humanity will experience what life can be like under the righteous government of God.
The Millennium is not merely an interesting detail of Bible prophecy. It is part of the good news of the Kingdom of God that Jesus Christ proclaimed.
For Christians today, these prophecies should do more than satisfy curiosity about the future.
They should give us hope—and motivate us to live according to the values of that coming Kingdom now.
The question is not simply, “When will the Millennium begin?”
A more personal question is:
Am I allowing the coming Kingdom of God to shape the way I live today?
